A Good Manager Knows How To Get a Group Moving

Our textbook explains that performing is, "The fourth stage of group development when the group is fully functional and works on group task" (Robbins and Coulter). Managers can help groups get to the performing stage more quickly by doing the forming and storming stages for them. For the forming stage, the manager could select individuals for each group, define the purpose of the group for them and explain why the groups are structured the way they are structured. Then, the manager could tell them that each person will rotate through each role in the group for half the day, a day, a week, or a month (depending on the length of the project). This tells the group exactly what they would need to figure out and lets them know that they will all get a chance to be a leader. For the storming stage, instead of telling the group exactly how the group should start the project, the manager could suggest multiple ways of starting the project. The group could choose from the options provided or brainstorm a new idea if they are interested in doing that. By doing these steps for the group, the manager has set clear roles and given them multiple ways of moving forward, which moved them through those two stages relatively quicker than they would have done on their own. Another way the manager could get the group moving faster through the stages is by doing an ice breaker activity once everyone is in their group. I have been in so many workgroups, and I can attest that an ice breaker activity works wonders for bringing everyone closer together. Even though I am an introvert to the core, and I hate some of the ice breaker activities, they always work, and I am always happy we did them.
