In what ways do fake/satirical news shows such as The Daily Show and Last Week Tonight appeal to young people who have changed the way they consume news?  Use the news story you chose for your discussion post that has been covered by The Daily Show or Last Week Tonight and compare and contrast the reporting of the story to a newspaper report of the same story. Expand on your description from the discussion post and essay. Your essay should be an analysis of the contrasts in the two formats. An analysis is not a summary.

Defining Analysis: Detailed examination of the elements or structure of something.

A minimum of (5) five-sentence paragraphs is required. You must cite your sources.  Include an APA citation reference to at least two sources. Different from your discussion posts, this assignment will require a Word.docx to be submitted for grading.

Satirical News

Last Week Tonight and AP News covers content concerning the Taliban takeover of the Afghanistan government. First, AP News offers a general understanding of the factors that contributed to the Taliban takeover (Seir n.p). Then, in the news, the authors indicate that the collapse of the Afghanistan government paved the way for the Taliban. On the other hand, the Last Week Tonight news mainly focuses on the failures of the United States in preventing the attack (Oliver n.p). According to John Oliver, the president of the United States, Joe Biden, failed in developing a contingency that cost Afghanistan.

Secondly, the AP News indicates that the president of Afghanistan fled from the country, which allowed the Taliban fighters to enter the abandoned Presidential Palace in Kabul. In this case, the Taliban fighters aimed at restoring the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, which was halted due to their collaboration with United States lead forces. On the other hand, John Oliver indicates that the development of this war was caused by the break of promise the United States made with Afghanistan. According to John Oliver, during the Trump administration, a deal was made between the Taliban and United States in the prevention of terrorism (Oliver n.p). However, after Biden was made president, the promise was broken, causing the Afghan citizens to suffer the consequences of the United States government.

Despite the differences in the two news channels, there are similarities shown in both texts. Both Last Week Tonight and AP News discuss the impact of the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. In both the news articles, the Afghanistan citizens try to escape from Afghanistan as they are afraid of what the Taliban could do (Seir n.p). They lined up in cash machines to withdraw their money and flew to start a new life in a safe country. However, there were not enough airplanes which made Afghanistan hang on the plane well and wings. Unfortunately, many fell from the sky, causing a lot of deaths and losses in the region.
