A public health issue is a socio-structural condition that can influence health of the public. In comparison, medicine focuses on treating the individual. The advantage of labeling a health disparity as public health issue is it has the potential to increase funding for research, intervention programs and policy changes to help close gaps in inequalities through prevention.
