Question

1. In two complete sentences and in your own words, accurately describe one type of

Developmental Influence/Event (DI/E) of your choice.

For example: I will describe a “normative history-graded influence/event. A

normative history-graded influence/event is a major event that…”

2. In at least three complete sentences, describe in detail an example of the influence of

event above that you or someone you know experienced.

For example: On September 11, 2001, terrorists flew two airplanes into the

World Trade Center towers. This was the first time this country experienced an

attack on American soil. The news of this event circulated quickly and soon

people across the country were watching the event on television.

3. Accurately and thoroughly explain how the DI/E example in # 2 above fits into that

particular type of DI/E. That is, why do you think the event that you or someone you

know experienced is an example of a normative history-graded influence or event?

For example: 9/11 is a normative history-graded event because it occurred at

a specific time and place and affected everyone who was alive and old enough

to understand what had happened.

4. Explain how the DI/E in #2 above influenced you or someone you know across two

different age periods. Please bold the key statements.

For example: When 9/11 happened, I was in high school beginning my senior

year. I had great plans to take a gap year and travel through Europe and Asia.

After 9/11, however I was afraid to leave the country and my home. All of a

sudden, the world seemed so large and scary! I knew I had to stay home and

start college soon after I graduated. Later, after I graduated from college and

married, my partner got the opportunity to spend a year working in Kuwait. It

was an amazing opportunity for both of us, but all I could think about was

9/11 and how I scared I felt. My fear was so strong, that I convinced my

partner not to accept the job and instead stay home. This was such an

amazing opportunity for my partner to give up that we eventually divorced.
