Your paragraph due this week is to be inspired by one of the three reading selections assigned in Chapter 14 of Common Ground (pp. 273–278). "Escaping the Fact-Filled World" "Why I'm a Gamer" "With Fantasy, Opportunities are Endless" Start by sharing your impressions of these three readings to help you determine the best approach for your own paragraph. Of the three reading selections, which one did you find yourself relating to more closely? In your first post, please do the following: 1) Explain which reading triggered your memory or experience of a fantasy activity and what was the activity you thought of. It may be one mentioned in the readings or not, and it could include video games, fantasy novels, escape rooms, historical reenactments or fantasy football, to name a few. (If you do not relate to any fantasy activity, you may identify and describe a leisure activity of your choice.) 2) List three or four reasons why you think the activity is popular. Later in the week, narrow your topic, construct a topic sentence, and develop support for your paragraph.

Escaping the Fact-Filled World By Lynn Snyder Christine Folch is an anthropologist, a person who studies humans, human nature, human development, and human societies. In an article in The Atlantic entitled “Why the West Loves Sci-Fi and Fantasy: A Cultural Explanation,” Folch explores the issue of fantasy. Specifically, she asks, “Why are we [Americans] so into science fiction and fantasy?” To answer this question, Folch uses a theory about fantasy presented by Max Weber, a German sociologist. Weber argues that the modern world seems “disenchanted” and “boring.” In other words, there is no fantasy available to people these days. The world is dominated by facts and science. In this world, there is no room for mythical dragons, zombies, or fantasy play. However, people need to experience wonder, so in a world that is dominated by science and facts, people are drawn to fantasy. Folch believes that “we turn to science fiction and fantasy in an attempt to re-enchant the world.” She points out that by rewriting childhood fairytales as adult stories, adults can experience fantasy. The popular Harry Potter series provides a great example of this. Was the series written for children or adults? The answer is: both. Adults and children alike read the books and saw the movies. Fantasy, it seems, helps adults escape the boredom of a world where black and white realities dominate. By entering into a world of wonder, adults can temporarily take a break from the boring world of reality.

Why I’m a Gamer By Hannah Chandler When you think of gamers, you may think of preteens or young adult males sitting in a messy living room, drooling, and strapped to game controllers. That would not be me. You see, I’ve gone to college, and I’m married. I have a clean, bright house with cats, clothing catalogs, cappuccino, and consoles—video consoles, a lot of them! Not all of my friends understand my love of gaming. They may relax by browsing shoes and clothes, but I can’t relax until I’m in another world. And that’s why I’m a gamer. Video games give me the ultimate form of relaxation. Video games do for me what massage and meditation do for others. When I get home from a long day of work, I make some green tea and settle into my comfy chair. I pull up RuneScape (old school version, mind you) or Minecraft, and I go to “work.” This is the best kind of work possible. I’m free to create anything I want to create. I can roam anywhere. I can be anyone I want to be. My creative options are endless. And if I’m in a social mood, I can meet my friends online inside my imaginary world. While I am playing my games, thoughts about life, work, and the world have no place in my mind. I enter a sacred space: a space where my imagination gets the freedom to explore without limits. Gaming, for me, is downtime for the mind. Without that downtime, I would be a far less productive and cheerful person. I believe that having the time to relax with my games helps me to handle the stress that comes from everyday issues. So yes, I love my gaming, but I also need my game time. It makes me a better human being.

With Fantasy, Opportunities Are Endless By Nate Calloway Do you remember playing make-believe when you were a child? “Let’s play pretend,” one kid says to another. “What do you want to be?” The possibilities were endless. You might choose to be something exotic like a pirate or a princess. Or you might choose to do something that is ordinary for adults but impossible for children, such as cook, work with power tools, or drive. As adults, we still enjoy pretending to do activities that we’ll probably never be able to do in real life. I couldn’t skateboard to save my life, but I can imagine being a skater by playing a Tony Hawk video game. I’ll never fly a jet airliner, but a flight simulator gives me the opportunity to have a similar experience. I might even enjoy being scared to death. A company has converted an abandoned mall outside London into a zombie survival fun house. For about $200, visitors can spend a few hours battling the undead with real-looking weapons while searching for the laboratory where the essential vaccine is stored. I can imagine having a great time shooting zombies! Clearly, fantasies can fuel the imagination. They give us a way to dream and to think creatively. And they can be downright fun.
