Technology and Health

Communication is an important factor in any situation. In nursing communication is key. Many times interventions and outcomes are driven by the communication between the clinician and the patient. Nurses, through communication skills, can recognize the patient healthcare needs, as a meaningful communication with patients enables nurses aspire to enhance a thorough knowledge of individual patients and their personal characteristics. (Fahkr-Movahedi et al., 2016) Therapeutic communication can be defined as "an interactive empathic process that supports the development of a rapport through which the client's experience can be understood, therefore contributing to the development of a helping relationship between the client and the care provider." (Schwind et al., 2016)

One of the benefits for the patient when the nurse practitioner incorporates therapeutic communication is a more patient-centered approach to care. Clients report that caregivers' effective therapeutic communication decreases their stress and anxiety, resulting in a more positive health care experience for them. (Schwind et al., 2016)When patients are comfortable with their provider, in this case a Nurse Practitioner, they allow the formation of the trusted relationship with their provider, and are more open and receptive to the recommendations. Better assessments of the patient and their health, and stronger problem-solving abilities are a few other benefits of therapeutic communication. (Fahkr-Movahedi et al., 2016) Effective communication leads to an increase in information sharing from both parties. It allows the NP to provide support simultaneously when information is being provided. Therapeutic communication leads to more positive outcomes and increased patient satisfaction.
