Purpose:

The Civil War redefined freedom and the nation. We no longer look at the country as a Union of States but as a Nation. President Lincoln led the country through its most challenging trial. Every generation has experienced at least one challenge (however large or small) to the concept of republicanism form of government. Whether it is the Great Depression and threat of authoritarian governments, World War II and fascism, or the Cold War and communism, this country has endured a lot. Lincoln's Address is one of the most famous and unique speeches in the history of the United States. He spoke of the war and connected it to America's mission in the world in less than five minutes.
