Instructions
Answer the question in essay format. Essay format includes 1) an introductory paragraph (~ ½ page) with a thesis statement (last sentence of first paragraph) which includes three categories of evidence, 2) three sections of evidence each with a topic sentence (first sentence of the section) which supports your thesis, and 3) a concluding paragraph (~ ½ page) with a concluding statement (first sentence of last sentence, restates thesis).
Prompt:
What are three ways that the lives everyday people changed the United States between 1865 and 1900?
Hints:
You are focusing on how the lives of individual people changed not how society as a whole changed.
The best categories are very broad and allow for multiple examples from multiple chapters. A better category is moved locations (could apply to lots of different groups moving from one place to another) rather than moved West (which only applies to moving West.)
This essay is intended to be a view of the material from 30,000 feet, rather than close up. You do not need to explain in detail each of your examples. The goal is to use the examples to prove your argument. Provide your example and then a footnote to show the source.
Your essay structure should follow the required format and include three kinds of ways lives changed (including an action verb to show the change) and not be three groups of people or three periods of time. For example, people moved locations. This would allow you to discuss people moving during Reconstruction (chapter 16), Asian immigrants or African Americans to the West (chapter 17), rural migrants to the city to work (chapter 18), immigrants coming to the United States (chapter 19), and Coxey's army (chapter 20). You should include an example from each of the five chapters when you can, some categories may only include four chapters, but your your whole essay should include ALL of the assigned material.
This essay is like a puzzle and requires you to check that you have used all of the assigned sources. I do not recommend waiting until the last day to write the paper. I recommend following the steps I have suggested over the week the essay is assigned.
I could not upload all the sources, so I made a link on icloud with all of them in it. If you hhave trouble accessing it, pleas
