Question
In this paper, you will first identify a societal problem that you believe is harming people and/or the planet.
Explain the nature and scope of the problem, why it is worth solving, and what its main causes are. Explore these and other additional dimensions of the problem:
In what ways does it intersect with, reinforce, or otherwise relate to other societal problems?
How do its effects on people differ depending on race, religion, gender, socioeconomic status, national origin, etc.?
How has the severity and scope of the problem been trending (has it been getting worse or better recently) and what are the implications for society of those trends?
Present and describe at least two long-standing or traditional approaches to solving this societal problem.
Briefly comment on the pros and cons of each, based on data and objective evidence (rather than subjective opinions) wherever possible.
Describe at least one nonprofit organization using each of the solutions you identify and evaluate their effectiveness in doing so. Describe their theory of change and its underlying assumptions. Assess the effectiveness of those organizations in using this solution to make an impact on the problem, using objective evidence/data wherever possible.
If you wish to present policy solution or one that would be implemented by government, focus your case on the role of nonprofits in advocating for and ensuring appropriate implementation of this policy solution rather than on the efficacy of the policy itself (though briefly summarizing the benefits of the policy is appropriate)
Present and describe at least one newer, more innovative solution to this problem, and also comment on its pros and cons based on evidence/data wherever possible.
Describe at least one nonprofit organization using the newer solution(s) and evaluate their effectiveness in doing so (using data/evidence wherever possible). Describe their theory of change and the assumptions it rests on. (Our Rescue is a great nonprofit to use)
A future version of this assignment will ask you present your own unique solution to this problem, which can be a variation or enhanced version of some existing solution. You do not need to present your idea in this paper, but you should start thinking about it as you research and write this paper.
