The use of intermediate criminal sanctions, punishments less restrictive than        incarceration but more intense than community probation, is not a recent             phenomenon. While often discussed as alternatives to prisons, intermediate       sanctions can also be used to help reintegrate offenders back into society.          Examples of such step-down facilities would be day reporting centers or               residential reentry centers.

Why or why not? If not, what would  you suggest as an alternative?
