Each student should assume the role of an external consultant hired by the firm’s corporate leadership. Each student must identify a strategic issue faced by the firm and providing a recommendation to address the strategic issue. (to clarify, the assignment is for a coherent and well-organized written essay, not just answers to the individual questions).

Johnson & Johnson:
  • Evaluate J&J’s organizational design and structure, using concepts and tools from the course.
  • What are some benefits of this structure and why have recent CEOs tried to make some changes to it?
  • Are the firm’s design and structure responsible for its recent quality issues in any way and how can these be addressed in the future?

Specifically, each student’s case analysis must:
• Address a professional audience (in relation to their rhetorical context, e.g., C-Suite, Board of Directors)
• Identify the strategic issue faced by the firm
• Provide at least one piece of concrete evidence to show that this is a strategic issue
• Identify a specific recommendation
• Support that recommendation with one piece of evidence to show that it would help resolve the strategic issue
