Hello,

• What are the reasons for these shortages? If the United States and other industrial nations put their resources into increasing nurse retention, would the need to recruit foreign nurses to decrease? Why or why not? 

According to Haddad (2020), "The nursing profession continues to face shortages due to a lack of potential educators, high turnover, and inequitable workforce distribution." Some potential reasons for shortages are an aging workforce, nurse burnout, career and family, and violence in the healthcare setting (Haddad (2020). The shortage creates concerns with nurse-patient staffing ratios. According to Haddad (2020), "Appropriate staffing levels will decrease errors, increase patient satisfaction, and improve nurse retention rates." 

According to Jones (2007), "Nurse retention focuses on preventing nurse turnover and keeping nurses in an organization's employment." Nursing retention strategies should be done during recruitment. Nurses pleased with the work environment would less likely suffer from nursing burnout. Therefore, increasing nursing retention can improve job satisfaction, promote professionalism, and improve patient care. Thereby, decreasing the need and demand for foreign nurses. 

• Choose one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and discuss how a community nurse can work toward achieving that goal.

Quality education is one sustainable development goal. Its purpose is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. A community nurse can help achieve this goal in the community by educating her clients. She can teach and provide strategies to identify risks factors, promote good healthy choices, and educate about comorbidities that are prevalent in the community.
