In Assignment 2, you will examine carefully the primary and secondary evidence covered in Unit 2 (including the digital textbook chapter and the Virginal legal records) to identify specific evidence that sheds light on the question of the developing role of racism in 17th century America. On a larger level, you should be looking for evidence that would allow you to draw conclusions about the degree to which ideas about racial identity affected the story of the growing colonial system. Did racism shape the story from the beginning? Did white colonists' ideas about race change over time? Did racism affect other aspects of colonial life differently in different periods within the 17th century? You can discuss historical developments related to slavery as part of this work because, obviously, slavery eventually took shape as a race-based system of controlling the lives of many Americans.
To successfully engage with these questions, you must identify and work directly with relevant evidence.
In this assignment, therefore, your job is to:
1. Identify in textbook chapter 2, seven (7) historical developments that connect to the larger historical question you are being asked to consider. These developments could take the shape of a specific event or be defined as a process playing out over a specific period of time. For example, if the textbook discussed the murder of an enslaved worker by the worker's legal owner, you could use that example as one of the developments. Or if the textbook discussed the increased importation of African enslaved workers during a particular decade, you could use that process as one of the developments you discuss. Be certain to include evidence from the Northern colonies as well as the Southern! At least two (2) of the historical developments that you identify should be from the Northern evidence.
2. In addition to identifying seven developments from the textbook, use the primary evidence from the legal records to identify another three (3) developments giving you a total of ten (10) historical developments to highlight in your submitted work.
3. Organize your ten developments to place them in chronological order, from earliest to latest.
For each of the ten (10) developments you have identified in total, compose 2-3 sentences (50 to 100 words) explaining, IN YOUR OWN WORDS, what is happening in this development and how it connects to the larger question about race in colonial history. Do NOT quote from the textbook or the documents or copy language from any other source. USE YOUR OWN WORDS!
For the seven developments that you have identified from the textbook, provide, at the end of each description, a citation to the exact page number in the textbook chapter on which you are basing your analysis. We will cover citation styles in a later unit. For now, simply put each page number in parentheses.
4. Finally, compose 1 or 2 sentences (50 to 100 words) in which you draw a conclusion about the degree to which racism affected colonial history and the degree to which this story shifted over time (if at all).
DO NOT work with other students on this assignment or share your specific ideas with the GroupMe!
