The amount of fallout that could be tracked from Freud to his dissenters and past students. Even society then, and society now looks at Freud with a hyper-critical eye. But that does not necessarily mean that this is unfounded. Historically known as pompous and ready to hold grudges until death. Specifically, one major nonconformist to Freud ideals was Karen Danielsen Horney, along with Adler and Jung. Originally a follower of Freud’s ideas but eventually “challenged Freud’s ideas about human sexuality, neurosis, and therapy. As a result, she incorporated a more sociocultural perspective into psychoanalytic thinking” (Woody & Viney, 2017, p. 413). It seems frustratingly ironic that some of her major contributions are only measure for worth when compared to Freud, in comparison and simply citing her as one of the figures against Freud. The work that she did during these bouts, and for their own merit, were extremely influential. And these were topics that historically, and clearly at the time, were problematic from Freud’s point of view: feminine psychology, basic anxiety and neurosis, the state of the subconscious and effects on neurosis. But she is not the only one, according to Shapira (2021), “Intellectual historians often focus on the most famous or radical, prolific theoreticians among psychoanalysts, thereby at times reproducing the self-centered biases of their subjects rather than providing a useful critique” (p. 55). The author goes on to discuss the historical, and often overlooked contributions, of Marjorie Brierley. One such reason these individuals are frequently discounted is due to how monumentally overshadowing discussions of Freud feuds and fallouts are, and how much they drive the narrative. Even now it could be argued that we are repeating the same loop but hopefully we have been able to come away with more understanding and recognition for others outside of the main arena.
