Question

Community Health

With my experience being in community nursing, I have seen more positive outcomes by the interventions I provide when I expand my interventions to the community as a whole. A community can refer to” many different groups of individuals. Nursing generally adopts a broad sense of community that includes the concepts of groups of people that hare social relationships, generally live within the same geographical location, and share a common interest.”(Edelman & Kudzman, 2018, p. 185) There are many health disparities we face as a country. Healthy People 2020 strives to identify nationwide health improvement priorities. Their focus is to increase public awareness and understanding of determinants of health, disease, and disability and the opportunities for progress. One of the objectives listed is “Nutrition and Weight Status”. (Health People Website, n.d.) This objective’s goal is to promote health ,and reduce chronic disease risk through the consumption of healthful diets, and achievement of maintenance of health body weights. (Health People Website, n.d.)This objective was addressed at the national level by our former first lady Michelle Obama and her Let’s Move Campaign that was launched February 2010, and dedicated to solving the problem of obesity within a generation.(Lets Move Website, n.d.)

At a local level, here in the West Texas and Southern New Mexico region, we have a health foundation named the Paso del Norte Health Foundation. This site was created 25 years ago, and focuses on key health priorities that affect the region, “Healthy Eating and Active Living” being one of them. (Paso Del Norte Health Foundation Website, n.d.) The goals of the healthy eating and active living (HEAL) initiative are to increase fruit and vegetable consumption and improve portion control, increase physical activity and decrease sedentary behavior, and create an environment that promotes health eating and active living without bias against obesity. (Paso Del Norte Health Foundation Website, n.d.) A great example of a community initiative to achieve optimal outcomes as a community for a health disparity.
