These responses are a chance to engage more deeply with the readings for the particular week, explain why a certain piece drew your attention or how it extended your thinking, challenge the conclusions of our authors (with evidence to support your challenge of course), make connections with the material covered in other courses, or think about the relevance of our readings to issues in Black social science and to your own experience. The goal here is to demonstrate that not only have you read but that you have read thoughtfully and considered seriously the ideas, perspectives, and information for the given week. To receive full credit, responses must do more than summarize the readings. Avoid simply giving your opinion of the reading without explanation or evidence.

This week's Reading Response, like all of them, will be evaluated on the following three criteria:

Does the response demonstrate a substantive understanding of the assigned readings?

Does the response demonstrate a critical engagement with the assigned readings?

Is the writing clear enough to convey your ideas to your reader?
