Instructions:

Anna Maria Santiago’s presentation titled “Fifty Years Later: From a War on

Poverty to a War on the Poor,” highlights a number of short comings of the

legislation passed under the Johnson administration in the 1960s. According to

the author, there were more than 200 pieces of legislation passed during this

period, and many of them have lasting effects today; even if the name or purpose

has been altered in one shape or another.

Choose one of the programs created as a result of these 200 pieces of legislation

and make an argument for why the program has succeeded OR write an argument

as to why the programs has been a failure.

Be sure to include: (1) the title and description of the program, (2) what social

issue it was aimed at tackling, (3) correlation to the criminal justice system and (4)

statistics to support your position.

You are also required to use an outside source such as a peer reviewed articles or

journals but no newspaper articles.
